In 1978 the English publisher lan Allan produced the book Last Steam Locomotives of Spain and Portugal by Michael J. Fox, recording the last years of steam traction in those two countries. The photographs came from many photographers, the book was well received and sold out very quickly. Many of the original illustrations came into the photographic archives of Brian Stephenson, co-author of this book, following the untimely death of Michael Fox in December 1997. These have been reproduced on much improved art paper with enhanced captions plus a substantial number of new pictures. RENFE, Portuguese State Railways, minor railways and industrial railways are all featured: the work of many renowned railway photographers; sadly a large number of whom have now passed away. The pictures form a unique record of an era which is now only a memory.
